Usually employed by large construction companies and working on the construction site while a major project is under way, a construction project manager is responsible for the budgeting of a construction project along with other important job duties. Construction managers can also be used even before a major construction job begins, as these managers are sometimes put in charge to clear a site of debris or to begin the job hiring process. - Before a small or large construction project can begin, a budget must be drawn so the organization funding the project is ensured that the project will not cost too much money after the building has been constructed. The construction project manager is required to view all the material costs as well as labor costs that will go into funding the project during the time required to complete the project. The manager views reports given to him by his construction work crew supervisors and tries to eliminate high costs by acquiring more affordable materials and by hiring lower cost laborers.
- As a major construction project begins, the construction project manager begins to schedule when a site's excavation starts and when the process of forming the building's foundation begins as well. The construction project manager informs his crew's supervisors to work with the plumbers, carpenters and project engineers as the project gathers speed. The project manager also helps to design blueprints and schematics along with the project engineers to ensure that the construction is progressing as quickly as possible.
- Responsible for hiring carpenters, general laborers and electricians to work on his construction project, the manager must also manage these large crews as well. Because larger projects can also include hiring outside contractors to paint, install electrical components as well as fully carpet the building, the construction project manager also supervises contracting employees while completing the project. The project manager can fire these contract workers along with his own employees when the contract workers are not doing their jobs well enough.
- Job accidents can happen frequently on major construction sites, so an important job duty of a construction project manager is dealing with emergency situations as they arise. It is up to the project manager to contact the closest hospital located near the job site and to indicate to the medical team what happened to the construction worker and give them information regarding the worker's exact injuries. The project worker deals with all the medical insurance paperwork required to admit the worker into the hospital as well.
