Park Guell is a breathtaking garden created by the Barcelonian architect Antoni Gaudi. It was built from 1900 to 1914. The park was named after Eusebi Guell, who had the idea to build 60 houses for the affluent middle classes of Barcelona. In this project he wanted to take advantage of the beautiful hill that the park is placed on so that he could provide luxury houses with great sights and clean air located away from the centre of the city and factories and with woodland walks on the way. However the project turned out to be commercially unsuccessful and it became a fabulous public park. In 1906 Gaudi moved in to live in one of the houses called Larrard House. This house has now become the Museum of Gaudi and is one of the most popular landmarks of Barcelona. It is included in the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites called€Works of Antoni Gaudi€.
While entering the park Guell, you can see an enormous double staircase and Gaudi's sculpture of a lizard. The artist really loved nature and apparently he was also inspired by it when he was creating this masterpiece of modernism. When you pass the staircase with the lizard, you will see that there is a room which is also specially designed by the artist. It is now the place of the central market. There is also a bench with a unique, specially designed curvature. To get the most comfortable ideal shape of the bench, Gaudi asked some workman to sit naked in wet clay. In the work of the park, Guell Gaudi included some national elements, religious mysticism and ancient poetry. The work has been declared as a monument of historical arts of national interest. It is full of life with its tall palm trees and the countless birds. Thanks to the genius work of Antoni Gaudi, everything in the park is unusual and specific. There is a special calming atmosphere that will make you feel like being in a fairytale rather than in a simple park.
Today anyone can visit the park Guell. It is free (except the museum) and open every day from 10 am until nightfall. It is a great place for spending your leisure time and enjoying the wonderful works of the world famous local architect. It is located quite far from the centre of the city of Barcelona but you can easily get there by bus or by train and of course, on foot if you love long walks.
