- Darvocet (propoxyphene napsylate) is prescribed to treat mild to moderate pain either when pain is present alone or is accompanied by fever. Darvocet is classified as a narcotic and is only available by a prescription.
- Darvocet is offered in two different strengths, Darvocet-N 50 mg and Darvocet-N 100 mg. The 50-mg tablets are capsule-shaped, film-coated, dark orange and imprinted with "DARVOCET-N 50" on one side of the tablet in black ink. The 100-mg tablets are capsule-shaped, film-coated, dark orange and imprinted with "DARVOCET-N 100" on one side of the tablet in black ink.
- Before beginning to take Darvocet, you should speak with your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: sleep apnea, asthma or other breathing disorders, liver or kidney disease, a history of head injury or brain tumor, low blood pressure, a history of drug or alcohol addiction, curvature of the spine, mental illness or a stomach or intestinal disorder.
- Darvocet may be habit-forming and should only be taken by the person it was prescribed for. Do not take more than your doctor prescribed. Dependence has occurred when patients have taken Darvocet for an extended period or at doses greater than prescribed.
- As with all prescription drugs, there are many reported side effects. Nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, seizure, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior, feeling light-headed, fainting, shallow breathing and a slow heartbeat are serious side effects, and you should contact your doctor immediately.
