The Role of Stress in Acne

We all know well that stress is bad for the health, but do you know that stress is related to acne? Well, studies have shown that acne flare-ups increase during stressful periods. Stress may be due to overwhelming workload, anxiety about an upcoming event like wedding, or any situation that can make you tense. Stress affects your overall health, including the largest organ in your body, i.e. the skin. Here is an insight into the role of stress in acne and how you can overcome it and stay acne free.

Stress worsens acne in two main ways - firstly, it stimulates your adrenal glands to secrete extra hormones, and secondly, it slows down your healing process. The adrenal glands secrete more cortisol, which in turn triggers your sebaceous glands to secrete more oil. As the oil mixes with dead skin cells, it clogs your skin pores and traps bacteria inside, and you end up with inflamed papules. Therefore, the ultimate fact is that stress instigates hormonal imbalance, which is the primary cause of your acne problem. This answers why pimples sometimes pop up overnight when you are weighed down. Chronic stress will release stress hormones continuously, which means that your immune system keeps fighting and just can't shut down. This pressure on the immune system causes inflammation that is in no way helpful to deal with stress. Over and above the inflammation, stress decreases the wound healing capability of your immune system. So, you can very well imagine the impact of stress on your acne.

Stress is a common part of our life, but it is never to be ignored. There are plenty of ways to handle stress though you need to find a solution that will work effectively for your situation. Eat right, sleep well, exercise regularly and avoid whatever triggers or aggravates stress. You've probably come across people who pick even the slightest blemish on their skin, more so when they are anxious or upset. They might actually have only scabs and this condition, known as acne excoriee, results in acne scars. A holistic approach is compulsory to cure hormonal acne due to stress. There's no point in simply targeting the symptoms, as the underlying cause involves your entire system. Let's discuss a few things that you can easily incorporate in your routine to overcome stress.

A good night's sleep can work wonders for skin complexion. Proper rest will empower your body with the ability to develop a solid immune system, which will help fight infection and enhance the wound-healing process. If you have to work late, you can get some uninterrupted sleep during daytime. Diet plays a good role as well and you can include cleansing foods like watermelon, cucumber, cabbage, celery, seaweed, aloe vera, cherries, brown rice, millet, etc. that will help you acquire natural clear skin. Naturopathic therapists advocate the benefits of morning sunlight, as exposure for a few minutes can help your body produce vitamin D, which not only fights inflammation but also aids in calcium absorption. Read Clearade reviews and you'll understand how vitamins can actually change your body's metabolism in acne treatment.

While the obvious solution is to reduce stress by engaging in relaxing activities and adopting healthful habits, you may also have to treat the acne breakouts with benzoyl peroxide cleansers or exfoliating agents as suggested by a therapist.
