ZANZIBAR
Zanzibar is known for its beautiful beaches for holiday makers. However, there is something else that make this same place a different destination from others "Spices". Zanzibar was governed by the Omani Arabs and still is after sending off the Portuguese. Seyyid Said bin Sultan arrived from Oman and fell in love the island, nevertheless, he did not manage to conquer the beautiful land until 1804.
He didn't admire the beaches alone but he also discovered the riches attached to the tropical Island. The clove mania hit the islands in the nineteenth century and became the largest producer of cloves in the world. Years later, the same spices were the economy booster which included Coconuts, cloves, Cardamom, Vanilla, nutmeg, ginger and many others.
Several plantations were owned by the Oman Arab Royal family and since they had acquiered enough slaves, they used them to do the work in the farms such as picking, drying and sorting cloves in the baking sun. Today the Island has more spices such as cinnamon, ginger and cardamom. However, discovering of the beautiful beaches has changed the business to tourism business and Pemba has been left concentrating on the spices. The sales of spices have declined due to the high flow of tourist to the farms as an attraction.
In tourism, hotels, old town, slave caves, spice farms are the greatest attractions. When you are sailing, or even flying, the good scent of the spices acknowledges the arrival to the Island, needless to ask you are at the spice home.
