Metal Shingle Roof Repair

    • 1). Put on work boots with adequate traction for walking on a metal roof. Do not attempt to walk on a metal roof when it is wet.

    • 2). Set a ladder against a straight side of the roof for roof access if you do not have access from inside the house. Tie a rope around your waist and connect it to a chimney or a structure on the other side of the house to secure yourself if you are nervous about walking on the roof.

    • 3). Sweep away any accumulation of leaves or other debris from the roof valleys with a broom. An accumulation of debris can trap moisture and lead to leaks. The valleys can also be sprayed out with a hose that has a spray nozzle.

    • 4). Reaffix any loose shingles. Spread roof repair adhesive under the loose shingle, then press it in place. Roof repair adhesive typically comes in a caulk tube, which requires a caulk gun for application. Lift up slightly on the shingles above the loose shingles if they are bendable. Nail the loose shingle down with new roofing nails. Spread roof repair adhesive over the nail heads and let down the shingle.

    • 5). Replace damaged shingles by prying them up with a pry bar, using a wooden block under the pry bar for leverage. The nails can be cut from underneath, if necessary, with a metal-cutting handsaw. Spread roof repair adhesive under a replacement shingle and slide it into place. Lift up slightly on the shingles above the loose shingles if possible. Nail the new shingle down. Apply roof repair adhesive over the nail heads and let down the shingle.

    • 6). Scrub any rust spots away with a wire brush. Follow up the scrubbing by treating the areas with a rust converter.

    • 7). Apply new coating to any areas where coating is missing or peeling, if your shingles are coated. Scrape away any loose coating with a wire brush and clean the area with soap and water. Paint those areas with metal roof primer using a paintbrush. After the primer dries, paint those areas with a metal roof top coating.
