So what was doing the love scene with flippers on like?
HANK AZARIA: I think the flippers were kind of? It makes a silly thing to latch onto as opposed to we're semi-naked lying on each other. How was lunch for you? Was it good? Yeah, it's awkward, but you get through it.
DEBRA MESSING: It's good in the context of a comedy. In a drama, I think it becomes a little more challenging because it's awkward no matter where you're doing it.
We still didn't know each other very well at that point. It was like, ?Okay, how're you doing??
HANK AZARIA: We did afterwards.
DEBRA MESSING: Yeah, we did, didn't we? But the flippers actually were a good source of comic relief. Did I make you uncomfortable?
HANK AZARIA: No, it was one of the happiest moments of my life.
DEBRA MESSING: I was pretty comfortable, too.
Debra, you're in the ?Garfield? movie?
DEBRA MESSING: I haven't seen any of the footage yet, but I play Arlene and I am Garfield's girlfriend. I am a cat. I actually was able to put the voice down for that part while I was shooting the other movie in London. It was fun. It's the first time I had done anything like this besides doing a ?King of the Hill.?
What materials did they show you?
DEBRA MESSING: They sent over a picture of a real cat, not an animated cat, but a real cat. She was black and sleek and had a little sass to her. Then they sent over all of my lines, so there was a little bit to glean from that. But really most of the work was done in the studio with the director.
We would do a scene 10 different ways and I would give them different readings. I'll be as interested as you to see it because I'm not really sure exactly what he's going to choose to put together.
