You've probably come across an infographic somewhere on the web, probably on a social media site. In fact I bet you've seen hundreds of them! They're growing in popularity mainly because they're a visually interesting way to communicate statistics that otherwise may come across as a bit dull. They can assist you in generating website traffic and publicity through social media, tweeting, social updates, news and blogging sites. People are alway on the look out for content that shows them something new and interesting. Why not use an infographic to meet that need?
Here are three idea to get your infographic looking fabulous.
1. Get some REAL statistics
A faboulous infographic must be simple to understand but must have some real statistics behind it. This is only possible by doing a bit of research, finding some statistics that are relevant to your field of work. It's never been easier to research a topic through the web or through online libraries. Even better would be to develop some of your own findings through your own investigations and questionaires. If you don't put this work in early on, no matter how visually great your infographic is it may still come across as a bit fake or shallow and that's the last thing you want someone to be thinking.
If you're going to make your infographic stand out, you really must get include data in your illustration. Things like... 2 out of 4 people... 3 in 5 dog prefer... There are 6,300 disasters... $15.9 trillion of tax payers money... something with numbers! If you don't have any real numbers in your infographic it's going to be hard work creating original, amazing graphics to go with the copy. And when push comes to shove - it is about the graphics! If you don't have the graphics well frankly it's not an infographic!
2. Give your infographic a brilliant headline
When you start to write the copy for your infographic do think long and hard about an amazing eye-catching headline. Put in something newsworthy, something that will shock your reader or at least make them look twice. You're probably going to put this infographic on Twitter, Pinterest or similar social media sites, so you've only got seconds to grab a viewers attention. If you don't put in a great headline, your reader is already onto the next tweet or update. So the lesson is don't waste a word!
And while talking about the copy please make sure your copy is cut down to the minimum. Cut and delete any words or phrases that are not absolutely essential to your key message.
3. Only use one message
Do you know what message you are trying to get across? What exactly are you trying to communicate? Whatever you do, please make sure you're only putting one main point across with each infographic you create. If you don't you'll end up with a mess of facts and figures and no one will learn anything from it. Stick to one main point, then repeat that message with 2, 3 or 4 really great facts.
So here's a summary of my three fabulous tips for making a great infographic
Find genuine statistics. If you're seriously trying to get into the news, don't be embarrassed by getting your facts wrong. It will certainly end up doing more damage than good. And don't look silly by having no statistics in there either!
Remember to have a great headline. If you're going to re-write something, let it be the infographic headline. If the headline doesn't stand out then neither will your infographic.
Use only one idea. If you have a lot of messages you want to get across, then create separate infographics for each one.
When you've finally prepared all your statistics, headline and copy then you'll want to find an infographic graphic designer to create your masterpiece. Once completed it will be ready to show the world and your message will spread like wildfire!
