Things to remember when taking fibric acid derivatives:
?Take the medications exactly prescribed by your health care practitioner.
?Do not miss any doses.
?If you miss a dose, be sure you take it as soon as you remember it. If you remember your dose a couple of hours before you are supposed to take your second dose, skip it and just take your second dose. NEVER double dose on any type of medication!
?Take the medicine with a meal or snack.
?Avoid drinking grapefruit juice when taking fibrates or any other cholesterol-lowering drug. Grapefruit juice will reduce the effectiveness of the drug because it interferes with the pathway that the drug is metabolized by the body.
?Avoid heavy alcohol use (no more than 2 drinks per day).
?Treatment is usually long-term. When your blood fats reach a healthy level, you will still need to take your medication.
?Always remember that these medications are not a substitute for a low fat diet! You will need to continue to eat a low fat, low cholesterol diet to effectively maintain your cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
