- 1). Decide what type of robot you want. Do you want a robot that can move outdoors? If so, you're going to want one that has a tread attached to its feet. Do you want a robot that is capable of grabbing and moving things? Then you'll need a robot with arms.
- 2). Choose a budget. Since you're looking for a cheap yet intelligent robot, realize that you may be sacrificing long-term durability as well as the ability of the robot. Essentially, the robot may be smart, but it will probably be weak also, and the parts won't hold up as well as a more expensive robot.
- 3). Purchase a robot building kit. Such a kit will walk you through the steps required to create, design and build your own robot. You can purchase a kit either online at one of the links in the Resource section or at many hobby shops or larger toy shops such as Toys "R" Us.
- 4). Build your robot according the robot building kit's instructions. Each robot is built differently, and depending on your robot, you may need tools that don't come with the robot building kit.
- 5). Teach your robot. Again, how you teach your robot depends on the type of robot you have. Some robots will teach themselves how to walk and move. Others will require user input to learn voice commands.
