- 1). Get a signature from the previous owner giving up the vehicle. The title paper has a location on it for the previous owner signature and for the new owner signature. Both signatures are necessary to process the title.
- 2). Fill out the Odometer Disclosure Statement. List the mileage of the vehicle and have the statement signed by both the buyer and the previous owner.
- 3). List the cost of the vehicle. If the car is purchased by a dealer, a bill of sale is required. If purchased by a private individual, the cost of the vehicle is listed on the title.
- 4). Take the title and paperwork to the BMV office. Pay the fees associated with the vehicle title, which will differ based on the sales tax costs and whether the title paperwork is filed on time or late. Obtain new plates or transfer the old plates as preferred to complete the process of buying the vehicle.
