How to Make a Hornpipe Musical Instrument

    • 1). Buy a clean, 6-inch curved horn from a leather supply shop and a 2-foot piece of hard African black wood, 1-by-1 inch thick. Make the rest of the musical horn in a wood workshop.

    • 2). Cut the hard wood to measure 6 inches in length using a hack saw, then clamp it on a table clamp in such a way you can drill its interior lengthwise. Make a narrow 1/4-inch internal bore by drilling the interior through using an electric drill and ensure the bore runs through in parallel to the outside length.

    • 3). Drill five finger holes on top of the wood piece, spacing them equally. Make a sixth hole on the side for the thumb; this hole should be the first hole. Give a 1 ½-inch clearance distance from the mouthpiece. Clear all the holes and make them smooth edged using a router.

    • 4). Shape the mouth piece using a router; trim it down to a width that can accommodate a mouth piece. Trim the rest of the width to make a neat oval shape. Shape the air exit hole, ½ inch in diameter, in such a way it will fit through the horn once complete.

    • 5). Cut the sharp end of the horn to make a ½-inch diameter hole. Run the horn near a jet flame from a welding gas nozzle, once it is soft and semi pliable, carefully apply glue to the end piece of the pipe and then slip the horn in. Let it cool and mould on the wood as one piece, ensuring the horn exit hole and the finger holes are compatible and facing up.

    • 6). Varnish and decorate the wood according to your taste.
