- 1). Find a train schedule. These can usually be obtained at a train station, and some rail services list their schedules online.
- 2). Read the schedule and pick the train you want to ride. To read the schedule, look for your stop, which is listed on the left side. If you read across the schedule, you will see the times of all the trains that stop at the station. If you read down the schedule, you will see all the times for a specific train, which can help you decide which train you want to ride based on arrival time at your destination. Regardless of the train you choose, arrive early.
- 3). Purchase your ticket. This is best done at the ticket window, which can be found at most major train stations. Some stations also have automated machines available, but others have no counter or machine at all. At these stations, you will have to purchase your ticket on the train. Surcharges may apply for tickets purchased on board; check with your rail system before riding to find out what the policies are.
- 4). Wait for the train and board it when it comes. As the train approaches, stand back from the edge of the platform. When boarding, watch out for the gap between the train car and the platform.
- 5). Find a seat on the train. This can be challenging, and train etiquette requires you to keep moving through the car until you find a seat. If there are no empty seats available, you can share a seat with another passenger.
- 6). Present your ticket to the conductor when he comes around to check. He will stamp or otherwise mark the ticket for you.
- 7). Listen for your destination and disembark when it is called.
