How do I Clean Basement Floor Drains?

    • 1). Remove the drain grate that covers the drain. It might just be snapped in or may need to be removed with a screwdriver.

    • 2). Pull out any clogs visible at the surface immediately inside the drain.

    • 3). Remove the plug on the side of the drain with a wrench if one exists.

    • 4). Insert the snake from a power auger down the drain a few feet and start it up. Make sure it is set to turn in a clockwise direction. Continue to push the snake down the pipe until you hit the clog. You will be able to tell because the snake will be more resistant to continuing down the pipe or the motor will start to strain.

    • 5). Turn off the motor and switch it to counter clockwise. Turn the auger back on and pull the snake out a foot or so. Turn the motor off and switch back to clockwise. Push the snake back down. Continue this process to break up the clog.

    • 6). Pour hot water down the pipe to clear it out. If water is still running slow, repeat the snake procedure.

    • 7). Put the plug back in place and return the grate to its position.
