Defender

A landmark side-scrolling space shooter, Defender is considered one of the most difficult games ever made, and just as addictive. The first game designed by Eugene Jarvis, who went on to create Smash TV and Robotron 2084, Defender takes place above the surface of a planet under alien attack. The space baddies are abducting the inhabitants and mutating them into flying space monsters.

The unique design and significant of Defender comes from the spinning plates gameplay.

Players have to shoot down enemy ships while trying to save the inhabitants from getting abducted, but if any of the people are captured by an alien invader, you then have to try and destroy the evil craft without hitting their captive, the catch the falling victim before they go splat. Any captive that they aliens sneak by to the top of the screen turn into a flying, shooting space monster on the attack. Loose too many civilians and the planet explodes into a swarm of the flying alien monsters.
