- 1). Place a clean, empty 2 liter soda bottle onto a flat work surface. Wrap a rubber band around the bottle. Slide the rubber band downward 4 inches below the top. Trace the rubber band with a marker. Remove the rubber band.
- 2). Cut off the top 4 inches of the bottle along the trace line with a pair of scissors. Discard the top and keep the base of the bottle.
- 3). Ball up multiple 1-by-6-inch newspaper strips into tight paper balls. Fill a large bowl halfway full of paper balls. The paper balls act as your beads.
- 4). Boil 5 cups water and 1 cup flour in a pot for three minutes to create the paper mache mix. Add at least 1 tablespoon food coloring to the mix to give your beads color. Allow five minutes for the mix to cool.
- 5). Pour the mix into the bowl of paper beads. Allow the beads to sit coated in the mix for one hour. Strain the beads in a strainer. Allow the beads an additional two hours to fully dry.
- 6). Bond the beads around the outside surface of the plastic bottle with white glue. Allow one hour for the glue to dry before using or displaying the vase.
