- 1). Add large windows to the south or southeastern side of your home. Put operable vents above the large windows. Open these vents when you want to passively cool down your home and allow the hot air to escape.
- 2). Install awnings or extend the roof on the south or southeastern side.
- 3). Block in windows on the north or northwestern interior side of your house. You can use drywall.
- 4). Add dark-colored stone or dark-colored masonry to the north or northwestern interior walls.
- 5). Add dark-colored stone to your floors. This, combined with the dark-colored walls, creates a thermal mass that collects the sun's energy for passive heating.
- 6). Remove trees or buildings blocking the sun from coming into the south or southeastern side of your home.
