How a Dental Crown Restores a Damaged Tooth

A dental crown is a strong cover to restore and protect damaged teeth.

Accidents happen, and when teeth are injured in the process, it constitutes a dental emergency. Therefore, you should not only pay attention to broken bones, fractures or open wounds - the teeth need immediate attention too. If a tooth is chipped or cracked, its structure is compromised and that will negatively affect its function. You will be biting into your food and feeling the injured tooth crumble. One way to avoid this is to get a dental crown placed on the relevant tooth.

What is a crown? Also known as a dental cap, it provides a strong outer cover for the damaged tooth. Damage is caused by physical trauma and serious decay. Some people inherit weak teeth through heredity. A crown provides the structural framework for an injured tooth, keeping the tooth intact. It also provides a barrier that is as strong as enamel against plaque causing bacteria, reducing the risk of decay. It stands strong against physical forces.

People with a bad bite are at more risk of damaging their enamel because their teeth are prone to grinding. The upper teeth and lower teeth will not meet as they are supposed to; therefore, the patient will put more pressure on the teeth trying to bite any food in the mouth. A dental crown can withstand high forces and therefore protect the host tooth.

Crowns are typically made of a porcelain layer that is visible from outside. Porcelain alone would not add much strength to the crown; therefore, currently the practice is to make the inner lining of the crown with metal and to finish it with a porcelain 'enamel'. This crown achieves two purposes: maintaining the aesthetics of the mouth with the porcelain finish, and adding strength and stability courtesy of the metal interior of the crown. It's possible to get crowns made from other substances such as resins, pure porcelain, and gold. Gold is especially strong and good for the back teeth that undergo more grinding. However, many people do not like to have gold crowns, as they look artificial in the mouth.
