Some of us are shy, others insecure and uncertain. This can manifest as awkward behavior. Co-workers will generally be sympathetic if they ever bother to understand you. Sometimes you can hide away in a solitary profession or low-key job.
But some of us are just not friendly at all. We are talking lone wolf. That is our nature and what we are. We are not necessarily sourpuss; we just donate like dealing with other people. That does not make us a nasty person. Some of us find that working on our own is quicker and easier than having to rely on the agreement, the pace of other workers.
I worked with translators on a newspaper. Two of them did about 15-20 words a minute, but one shot through 50 easily. She went to help out for a day on the entertainment pages and did everything by lunchtime. They did not ask her back!
Bearing in mind the 80-20 principle, that we accomplish 80% of a day's work in 20% of the time we work, it is understandable that some people who come on superior are, in fact, just that! And they are not friendly, why should they be?
However, if you are not a friendly person for whatever reason, you still have to bend and accommodate others. Be polite at least. Politeness cannot be faulted. As long as you can keep your own counsel, your thoughts to yourself, you cannot get into trouble. Your co-workers will pick up on your privacy issues, your reserve.
Co-workers are happy to give you the benefit of the doubt so long as you do not antagonize,to do when you do not feel a part of their little clique. Human resources people are too busy most times; they become dreadfully intrusive. Be quietly polite and do the minimum, but do it without complaint. They will back off.
