- 1). Place your guitar on a flat, stable surface. While the control knobs on an electric guitar are not bolted on, they are made to fit snugly and to not come off without a little work. Placing your guitar on a stable surface will help ensure you don't damage it when tugging the control knobs off.
- 2). Slide a thin piece of cardboard between the bottom edge of the volume knob of your guitar and the body of the guitar itself. Using cardboard will keep you from scratching your guitar's paint job.
- 3). Slide a flathead screwdriver (the thinnest you can find) or a butter knife between the bottom edge of your volume control knob and the cardboard, then apply a gentle upward pressure to begin working the knob off. Go around the edge of the control knob until you have evenly lifted the knob. You may need to do this two or three times to remove the knob.
- 4). Remove all knobs from your guitar using the same technique. To replace the knobs, be sure to seat the hole in the bottom of the knob onto the stem and press down firmly until you hear or feel the knob pop back into place.
