- Measure the door frame before choosing a screen door. Not all doors are made in standard sizes, so a perfect fit may not be available. Choose a door that is slightly larger than the frame rather than one that's too small. Check manufacturer guidelines for cutting or planing allowances on each side of the door. Taylor the door to leave 1/8 inch of clearance around every side.
- Put the hinges on the door and prepare the frame. Hold the new door against the frame and draw a pencil line around the outside of each door hinge and in the screw holes. Drill pilot holes at the marks. Bevel the outline 1/8-inch deep with a chisel. Chop the wood inside the outline with perpendicular chisel shots and remove 1/8 inch of depth with angular chiseling. Screw each attached door hinge into the frame and check the working fit.
- Remove wood frame doors and take off all hardware. Coat the wood with marine-grade spar varnish, exterior latex paint or a waterproof sealer. Reattach the hardware and hang the door.
- Hold the latch against the frame so it fits into the lever on the door. Mark the screw hole locations and drill pilot holes. Affix the latch with mounting screws and let the door close over it. Take note of the lever position for locking the latch.
