- 1). Smooth a thin layer of drywall compound with a taping knife over the seams between drywall boards and over screw heads.
- 2). Press strips of drywall tape into the compound over the seams as you go across the ceiling.
- 3). Smear another coat of compound over the tape to seal it. Let this dry for a day.
- 4). Sand the surface of the drywall compound lightly to take off any rough edges. Apply a second layer of compound over all the seams and screw heads. Spread this on wider than you did the first coat, and taper the edges down as you move farther away from the tape and screws. This will help give the appearance of an even flat surface. Let this dry for a day.
- 5). Paint the ceiling with a primer coat to give it a uniform cover. Let this dry for a few hours up to a day, and then paint the ceiling your color of choice. If you prefer a textured ceiling there are a few you can try. Mix up popcorn ceiling mix in a bucket as directed. Fill a texture sprayer with the mix and spray the ceiling with a thin coating of it. Let this dry for an hour, then go back over it with another thin layer. Alternatively, thin drywall compound to a consistency slightly thicker than paint and spray it on the ceiling. Work in small areas. After you spray a section, use a wide-bristle brush to brush a texture into the compound.
