Why Your Teeth Need Sealants

Sealants Many new and exciting advances have come about in dentistry.
One of these is a protective covering called a sealant.
A sealant is a coating placed on the biting surface of the back teeth.
It is used to fill in the deep grooves and pits that are normally present in everyone's teeth.
It is remarkable how sealants protect children and adults from tooth decay! Where Cavities Begin Many Cavities begin in these deep grooves and pits because they are too small for the bristle of a toothbrush to get into and effectively clean the area.
So, no matter how hard you try you will be leaving plaque and bacteria behind that can destroy the tooth.
The plaque or bacteria, that causes tooth decay can readily be found in the pits and grooves of the back teeth.
A good analogy to show the effectiveness of sealants is to compare the sealant to an umbrella.
The umbrella effectively protects you from the rain.
When the umbrella is opened, it spreads out to cover, protect and keep you dry.
The sealant covers and protects the biting surface of the tooth from the damaging storm of bacteria, sugars and acids.
Easy Procedure The procedure for placing sealants is very easy and it does not require any shots or drilling.
In fact, it is a rather fun experience, especially for the young! The tooth is cleaned, dried, and prepared with a sour solution.
The tooth is then washed and dried again and the sealant is applied.
In the beginning the sealant is in liquid form.
Because it is liquid; the sealant flows into all the grooves, pits and fissures of the tooth.
The sealant is then exposed to a special light that causes the sealant to become very hard.
The biting surface of the tooth is now protected from decay.
Sealants Do Not Prevent All Cavities You can still get cavities in between the teeth, that is why it remains important to brush, floss and use a fluoride toothpaste.
Sealants, brushing, flossing, using fluorides and coming in for your regular dental health checkups will provide you with the tools to go through life with a happy and healthy smile! The sealant is recognized by insurance companies as the second most effective preventative advancement in dentistry.
Many insurance companies are willing to pay 100% of the cost of the treatment, because they know that placing a sealant now is less expensive than paying for a filling or a crown or a root canal later.
Every mom, dad and child should seal out tooth decay.
