- The Criminal Justice Act of 2003 was introduced following research published by the U.K. Government in July 2002. The Act was introduced in 14 parts, with the majority of the Act aimed at the countries of England and Wales within the U.K.
- The Office of Public Sector Information reports that the Criminal Justice Act 2003 streamlined and introduced a sentencing structure to the U.K. system of trials. The aim of refining the trial system was to avoid abuses of the system.
- The Guardian reports the Criminal Justice Act altered a number of laws within the U.K., which included a change in the classification of cannabis from a class B drug to class C. The double jeopardy rule that did not allow a suspect to be tried twice for the same crime was abolished for 29 offenses, including murder.
