Bad Breath Treatment Depends on the Cause

Determining the cause of bad breath makes it easier to find the right treatment. It is often caused by food particles that are left trapped in the mouth and can breed bacteria that cause bad breath. Poor dental care is another common casue of bad breath. Halitosis can be caused also by an undiagnosed medical condition in the lungs, stomach, liver, kidney or bloodstream. Sinus and bronchial problems including smoking and dry mouth can also cause this.

The first step for treatment is to visit a dentist and doctor to find out what caused it. Individuals who have regular dentist visits can easily solve the problem. If a physician diagnoses that it is due to a bad condition in the lungs or gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidney or is connected to a systemic infection, then the appropriate treatment should be recommended. In some cases, problems like sinusitis and diabetes can also cause halitosis.

If a check up with a dentist or doctor does not show any medical problem, and the person regularly cleans his or her teeth and tongue, bad breath can be caused by the type of food the person eats. The individual may need to change the food he eats. Some individuals assume that it is only onions, garlic and other hot spices that give halitosis, unfortunately even certain common food can cause it.

For a frequent meat lover, if the individual allows meat particles to collect at the gum line, and remain stuck between teeth, and stick under fillings or crowns, these can grow bacteria that can cause bad breath. A protein rich and low carbohydrate diet can help an individual lose weight, but if the individual dieting consumes less than 100 grams of carbohydrates in a day, a condition known as ketosis can occur. The person can end up burning more fats than sugar. Having ketosis can cause bad breath.

Another effective way to combat halitosis is to regularly end a meal by taking green tea or by sipping green tea throughout the day. Green tea has compounds that prevent the build up of bacteria,Using a cinnamon stick to stir the green tea can mix in essential oils found in cinnamon to fight a bad breath.

Grinding or crushing herbs like parsley, mint, basil, dill and cilantro in the mouth can offer a fast and easy solution to bad breath. The essential oils in the herbs can remove odors. The chlorophyll in the herbs also give a person other health benefits.
