A little history about ties
The ties can be traced back to the 1600s where the Croatian mercenaries serving in the French military started wearing a small cloth around their neck to depict that they are part of a group. King Louis XIV started wearing a small kerchief around his neck in early 1646 and this became the symbol of French royalty. It became a craze throughout the European countries where both men and women were known to wear what is called cravat. Then the practice slowly moved to the other parts of the world in the subsequent years.

Ediety knot This type of knot became popular after its depiction in the movie matrix reloaded. It was worn by the Merovingian in the movie and hence also called as Merovingian knot.
Mistakes to avoid
Too short or too long The tie should be tied to just the right length. Too short, then you will look like a clown and too long it will look very odd. Make sure that the tie length is perfect.
