- 1). Use a garden fork to loosen the soil 6 to 8 inches deep. Discard all rocks and large grass or weed clumps.
- 2). Spread 2 inches of organic compost over the loose soil. Use a spade to mix it in well.
- 3). Fill a small container with three parts sand and one part Oriental poppy seed. This makes for a more uniform planting, as the seeds are tiny and difficult to disperse.
- 4). Broadcast the seed and sand mixture over the prepared planting site. Cover with a 1/16-inch layer of soil.
- 5). Keep the site lightly moist at all times, but avoid over-watering because this may interfere with germination.
