- 1). Use a drill to remove any screws from the wood paneling. Remove all nails with a hammer. Pry off trim or baseboard with a pry bar. If your plan is to reuse trim and baseboards, remove them carefully to avoid damage.
- 2). Use a pry bar to pry off the old sheets of paneling. If the surface behind the old paneling is wall board, remove any protruding screws, staples or nails. Scrape off any protrusions from the surface of the wall to make it flat, and remove any debris.
If removing the old paneling reveals the wall studs and wall insulation, remove any screws, staples and nails. Scrape the top of the wall studs with a putty knife to remove old construction adhesive and to make the surface flat and smooth. Replace or upgrade old wall insulation. - 3). Use a piece of painter's tape on the ceiling and floor to mark the location of the wall studs. Measure the wall and use a saw to cut the replacement paneling to size. Take an accurate measure of any obstacles on the wall that require special cuts to make the panel fit correctly.
- 4). Apply a bead of construction adhesive to the surface of the wall stud. Position the replacement wood panel on the wall studs and use a hammer to secure it with nails, or a drill to secure it with screws. Use the painter's tape marks to find the wall studs. Consult the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation of your brand of wood paneling.
- 5). Replace the trim or baseboards.
