- 1). Wash the fabric several times to preshrink it and to remove completely any chemicals applied by the manufacturer. Press it, so its surface is smooth.
- 2). Cut the fabric to the desired size with an added margin. Leave at least 5/8 of an inch seam allowance on each side if the fabric piece will be sewn into a project such as a quilt or a pillow.
- 3). Pour a small amount of the fabric-stiffening solution into a shallow pan. Lay the fabric in the pan and add more solution. Let the fabric soak in the solution for about five minutes.
- 4). Remove the fabric pieces from the solution, gently squeeze out the excess solution and set the fabric on a clean towel. Let them set for an hour or more until completely dry. Touch it up with the iron.
- 1). Edit your photo in a photo-editing application, being sure to brighten the colors and highlights. Set the resolution to 300 dots per inch (dpi).
- 2). Resize the photo to the size that will fit on the fabric piece. You can add guidelines around the outside of the photo to indicate cutting and stitching lines.
- 3). Print the photo with your ink jet printer on a sheet of plain copy paper.
- 1). Lay the dry linen piece over the paper printout, positioning it as desired. Tape the top margin of linen piece onto the paper with a strip of cellophane wrapping tape.
- 2). Gently place the linen and paper combination in the printer's paper feeder, with the linen side down and the taped end going in first.
- 3). Print the picture in the usual way according to your printer's regular processes.
