How to Cut Openings in a Concrete Wall to Install a Gate

    • 1). Measure the width of the gate unit that will be installed in the concrete wall. Transfer this measurement by making two marks at the base of the wall at the spot where the gate will be placed.

    • 2). Hold a 4-foot level vertically at each mark. Make sure the level is plumb, and make another mark at the top of the level. Use a chalk box to snap lines at each set of marks to indicate cutting lines.

    • 3). Wedge a sturdy piece of lumber at a 45-degree angle from the ground to the top quarter of the wall portion that is being cut out. This will prevent the wall from falling on you while you are making cuts.

    • 4). Check the concrete cutter's safety features and its gas and oil levels. Inspect the cutting blade to make sure it is in working order. Start the concrete cutter by following the tool's instructions.

    • 5). Cut along the vertical snapped lines, starting at the top and working down to allow gravity to do some of the work. Always keep both hands on the saw while you are operating it.

    • 6). Make a horizontal cut at the bottom of the wall after the vertical lines are complete. The horizontal cut should be deep enough to cut through any metal rebar that might be in the center portion of the wall. Do this on the same side as the wedged lumber to prevent the wall from falling on you.

    • 7). Push on the cut wall portion to make it fall. If the wall is still solid, place a wedge in the horizontal cut made at the base. Hit the wedge with a mallet or sledgehammer to drive the wedge into the cut, which will cause the wall to fall.

    • 8). Cut the fallen wall portion into smaller chunks for easy removal.
