Black History Month Activities for Metro Detroit

    Detroit Jazz Fest Concerts

    • Organizers of the Detroit Jazz Festival, held annually in September, put on concerts during Black History Month to honor iconic African American musicians and remember music from the Civil Rights era. Past concerts have featured music from James Brown and August Wilson and paid tribute to historical figures including Rosa Parks, Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.

    Detroit Institute of Arts

    • The Detroit Institute of Arts offers special programs during Black History Month to celebrate African American history. Activities include films, music, workshops, lectures and art displays. Many of these activities are family-friendly and hands-on, with kids being able to do things such as create their own art, listen to storytellers and participate in performances. Music events vary from drum presentations to jazz brunches and freedom song interpretations.

    Wayne State University

    • Wayne State University arranges public events during Black History Month during which faculty members, students, alumni and the community engage in discussions about past and current African American achievements in arts, literature and history. Readings and book signings take place at receptions, and audiences take part in demonstrations to commemorate historical events. Tributes are made to important figures, and there are interactive games to test people's knowledge of black history.

    Charles H. Wright Museum

    • The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History schedules programming during Black History Month, which is typically the museum's busiest month. Museum programming includes workshops, performances and discussions as well as a film series and musical events featuring prominent African American artists. Poetry readings and literary displays also feature the work of renowned figures in the community. Dance lessons and workshops help museum attendees enrich their own lives with unique skills.
