Many smokers say that the reason they do not succeed with quit smoking cessation is that they have no willpower. How can that be true?
We use willpower every day. We get out of bed , go to work , study, do the housework, cooking and washing up brush our teeth and iron the school uniforms; and we do all of these things when quite often we would really rather not.
How often have you heard that alarm go off at 6am, groaned, rolled over and hit the snooze button before pulling that nice warm doona back up over your head?
Once, twice, even three times, but eventually you do get up.
That is willpower.
You see, it is not that we do not have it; the trouble with willpower is that you have to remember to use it.
The same thing often happens when we move house.
Have you ever had that experience of moving to a different house in the same town? When you leave work or the shopping centre you automatically begin to drive to the old house and you need to use a little bit of willpower to change course. However as long as your new house is somewhere you want to go you do not experience any struggle or distress in this situation, you just adjust your course.
You have a very good reason for not going to the old house. There is probably someone else living there. It may have been knocked down. It would not benefit you to go there.
The same thing happens with smoking.
You automatically light up a cigarette at a certain time or place, in the same way you automatically drive to your old house.
However, the challenge can be that with a smoking habit, you do it many more times per day, thus reinforcing the habit and making it stronger.
It is such a recurring habit that you need to remember to use that little bit of willpower many times a day. When quitting without hypnosis many people find this distressing and when busy or pre-occupied they forget to use their willpower and find themselves with a cigarette in their hand.
Yet when you truly want to quit there is no struggle or distress, just a natural change in direction. Why would you want to go back to the old habit when there is nothing there for you?
This is where many smokers fall down.
The reality is that in their mind at least, there IS something there for them. They still believe there is a benefit for them in smoking that cannot be had in any other way. It would take a large amount of willpower to overcome that unconscious desire and yes, it can be done, for a while.
Some people can do it for years but they never lose that yearning for a cigarette.
They are an ex-smoker.
Clients at our quit smoking Brisbane clinic do not experience this yearning. By using hypnosis to quit smoking they reprogram their unconscious mind and do not want a cigarette.
They are a Non-smoker. Willpower has nothing to do with it.
You dont need ANY willpower at all to refrain from doing something in which you have absolutely no interest!
