- As you've probably guessed, the primary ingredient of a diaper bag is diapers. Enough diapers should be packed for a change every hour of the outing, and every bag should contain a minimum of at least four diapers. Plastic bags will be needed for used diapers and soiled clothing. Cloth-diaper users will need wraps, pins and covers. A full container of baby wipes is essential, and changing pads come in handy.
- Babies prone to diaper rash can't leave home without an ample supply of zinc-oxide diaper rash cream, vitamin A & D ointment, aloe vera and petroleum jelly. Topical teething gels and liquid baby acetaminophen help soothe babies' minor aches and pains. A thermometer and a rubber bulb syringe nasal aspirator are also handy items for the diaper bag, along with any prescription medications. Baby sunblock can be packed for summer trips.
- Food items are packed into the diaper bag as well, depending on the baby's age. A newborn's bag will need several capped bottles of water and a tightly sealed container of baby formula. A measuring spoon will be needed to mix the formula. Jars of baby food and a spoon, along with favorite snacks will keep your little bundle of joy well-fed. Older babies may require sippy cups and bottles of juice.
- An entire change of clothes belongs in every diaper bag. A pair of footed pajamas or onesies are useful for outings past bedtime. You'll need a bib, along with a pacifier or teething ring. Antibacterial gel and plenty of baby powder are common diaper bag items. The bag should contain a bottle of water, breast pads and some facial tissues for Mom. A few toys and comfort items for baby are always helpful, too.
