- 1). Lay down rugs throughout heavy traffic areas. Doorways, places near sitting areas and traffic flow areas benefit from rugs or mats. Pets use the same general areas as people do, and their claws can scratch more that your shoes can scuff. Rugs reduce wear and tear on the floor.
- 2). Clip nails often and file them. Clipping your pet's nails will keep them short so that they are less likely to touch the floor. If you can file them as well, this will help smooth the edges. Clipping them can sometimes create a sharp edge.
- 3). Take pets out often and house-train them. This will reduce accidents that could damage the floor.
- 4). Add caps to claws so that they don't scratch. The caps glue on and are made for both cats and dogs.
