- 1). Determine before calling the Michigan Business Center if you will need a tax resale ID number. Tax resale numbers are required for businesses selling goods at a physical or online location. You will need to acquire a tax resale number at the same time you obtain a small business license, if you plan to sell items.
- 2). Determine if your business will be a sole proprietorship, partnership, or limited liability corporation. Typically, most small businesses fall under the sole proprietorship category, unless you start the business with one or more people. You can pick the correct business license by knowing your business type.
- 3). Contact the customer assistance center at the Michigan OneStop Business Center in Lansing, Michigan. Register with the state's services by providing your first name, last name, email address, and telephone number. You will also be asked to create a user name and password to check your license status online.
- 4). Provide the Michigan Business Center with your Social Security number, birth date, and driver's license number. The Business Center will also ask what you would like to name your business, and whether you will sell products at a physical location. If you do have a physical business location, provide the center with this address.
- 5). Visit the Michigan Business Center to receive your business license. You must present identification at the time you pick up the license.
