Lance-Naik-Albert-Ekka

Albert Ekka was born on 27th December 1942, in Jari village of Chainpur tehsil Ranchi tehsil of Ranchi district (now Gumla district) in the Indian state of Bihar (now Jharkhand). His father's name was Julius Ekka and he hailed from a Christian Uraon family. at the age of 20, on 27th December 1962,  Albert was enrolled in the 14 Guards of the Indian army.

On December 3rd , 1971 war broke out between India and Pakistan. The war continued for 14 days. On the very first day  14 Guards was given the mission to capture a enemy position near Akhaura, at Gangasagar. It was on the border between present-day Bangladesh and Indian state of Tripura.

It was a well-fortified enemy position with good strength.  The capture of this position was curtail as this position was the key to capturing Akhaura. At 0400 hrs on 4th December 1971 The 14 Guards launched an attack on Pakistani positions. Lance Naik Ekka was part of the left forward company of the battalion. Indian soldiers came under heavy small arms fire and shelling but they pushed forward regardless. The soon engaged in hand to hand combat with the enemy. An enemy LMG had the assault group pinned down causing heavy casualties.  Ekka observed the LMG's position, then charged the Pakistani bunker with complete disregard for his personal safety, he bayoneted two Pakistani soldiers and silenced the Machine Gun.

In spite of the heavy injuries sustained during the encounter Lance Naik Albert Ekka kept fighting. Ekka and his fellow men cut a swath through the Pakistani lines. They cleared bunkers for a distance of 1.5km. They were almost finished with their mission when a MMG opened fire from the 2nd floor of a well-fortified building. As it was a surprise attack it caused heavy Indian casualties and stopped the Indian troops progress.

Once again Lance Naik Albert Ekka came forward  despite of his injuries and heavy enemy fire. He crawled and reached the building and threw a grenade into the bunker. Which killed an enemy soldier and injured others. The MMG was still firing. Ekka scaled a sidewall and entered the bunker. He then bayoneted the enemy soldier holding the MMG nest and  silenced the MMG. Lance Naik Albert Ekka's attack saved his company from suffering more casualties and ensuring the success. During the action he sustained serious injuries and died after the completion of the mission.

With the fall of Gangasagar, , the southern and southwestern flanks of Akhaura were completely exposed. The Pakistani's rear position was threatened  and they were forced to vacate Akhaura.

Lance Naik Albert Ekka displayed conspicuous bravery and determination, which was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Indian Army. Lance Naik Albert Ekka  was awarded the highest wartime gallantry medal Param Vir Chakra, posthumously.
