After two successful seasons, MTV’s teen comedy Awkward returned for its third season with an expanded episode order of 20. This season finds main character Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards) in a stable relationship with her boyfriend Matty McKibben (Beau Mirchoff), while her best friend Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) is now dating Jenna’s ex-boyfriend Jake (Brett Davern). Jenna takes a creative writing class, Ming deals with the Asian mafia, and the whole group tries to navigate junior year of high school.

Episode 1
Title: “Cha-cha-cha-changes”

At the beginning of junior year, Jenna is worried that she’s lost her connection to her friends, after Tamara spent the summer in Europe with Jake and Jenna has been spending all her time with Matty. Jenna ends up enrolled in a creative writing class taught by an intense teacher (Anthony Michael Hall). Rumors are flying around school that Sadie is pregnant, but Jenna is actually the one who believes she might be pregnant. But Jenna isn’t pregnant, and Sadie is just stressed about her family being broke. Ricky Schwartz dies unexpectedly.
Episode 2
Title: “Responsibly Irresponsible”

The entire school is mourning Ricky Schwartz, who died of an allergic reaction to peanuts. Tamara believes that she might have been responsible for Ricky’s death because she cursed him. After her pregnancy scare, Jenna is feeling uneasy about sex and decides to go on birth control.
Matty gets a tattoo of Jenna’s name. At Ricky’s vigil, Tamara and Sadie talk about how much they hated Ricky, and the event turns into a party. Matty discovers that Jenna thought she might be pregnant, and he feels hurt that she didn’t tell him.
Episode 3
Title: “A Little Less Conversation”

Worried that Matty is upset about her telling Jake (and not Matty) about her pregnancy scare, Jenna avoids being alone with him, by recruiting Tamara, Jake, Ming and Ming’s new boyfriend Henry for a group date. On the date, Tamara gets upset about Jake and Jenna’s closeness, and when Jenna and Matty finally talk, he has the same concerns. Tamara makes up with both Jake and Jenna, and Jenna and Matty acknowledge that they need to communicate better. Ming reveals that she’s only pretending to date Henry as a cover for her continued relationship with Fred Wu. Sadie admits to Matty that her parents have left her alone after going broke.
Episode 4
Title: “Let’s Talk About Sex”
Original Airdate: April 30, 2013
Jenna’s dad gets upset after discovering her birth control pills, and calls Matty’s parents to let them know that Matty and Jenna are having sex. Matty’s parents come over for an uncomfortable dinner that ends disastrously with Matty’s mom accusing Jenna’s mom of being an irresponsible parent. After clashing with his parents, Matty ends up asking to crash at the Hamiltons’. Tamara and Jake declare their love for each other and sleep together for the first time. With Lissa injured, Tamara gets called in as an alternate cheerleader.
Episode 5
Title: “Indecent Exposure”

After five days of Matty living at her house, Jenna is going a bit crazy. She feels like she has no space or privacy, and when she inadvertently reveals her frustration to Matty, he understands. She tells him to stay, but after having a talk with Jenna’s mom, he realizes he needs to go back home and talk to his parents. Tamara crashes a sleepover at Sadie’s house, where she, Sadie and Lissa use a Ouija board to contact the spirit of Ricky Schwartz, and they get the message that his death wasn’t an accident.
Episode 6
Title: “That Girl Strikes Again”
Original Airdate: May 14, 2013
On Halloween, Jenna worries that she’s not cool or attractive enough for Matty, who ends up at the top of the “hot list” (while Jenna is on the “not list”). She convinces Matty, Jake, Tamara and Sadie to go with her to a party thrown by Collin from her creative writing class, whose girlfriend Angelique is Sadie’s former childhood best friend (and current nemesis). At the party, Jenna is more popular than Matty (which reassures her about their relationship), Jake accidentally gets high, and Sadie steals a horseback-riding trophy she feels she should have won over Angelique.
Episode 7
Title: “Guilt Trippin’”
Original Airdate: May 21, 2013
Jenna is uneasy about the Palos Hills homecoming tradition of guys pinning elaborate pins on their dates, since it singles out girls without dates. She especially feels bad about her former friend Christy, who appears lonely and depressed. At first Jenna decides to protest by not attending the dance, but then she agrees to go. Jake teaches Matty some dance moves so he can impress Jenna, and when Jenna realizes the Christy isn’t lonely (she’s just a drug dealer), she finally loosens up and has fun with Matty. Ming attempts to sabotage a task the Asian mafia demands of her, but ends up doing exactly what they want.
Episode 8
Title: “Rubbed Raw and Reeling”
Original Airdate: May 28, 2013
Jenna is coerced into reading one of her pieces at a coffeehouse for her creative writing class, and is nervous about revealing something personal. She orders Matty not to come, and he and Jake hang out together and attempt to have a whole evening without calling or mentioning their girlfriends. Jenna reads a blog entry about losing her virginity, and her mom is very proud of her (if mortified). Collin is also at the reading, and afterward he and Jenna have a conversation that leaves her questioning the strength of her feelings for Matty.
Episode 9
Title: “Reality Check”
Original Airdate: June 4, 2013
Jenna is worried that she’s been fantasizing about Collin too much and is being distracted from her relationship with Matty. Assigned to write about her “fantasy” first time, she imagines Collin, but Matty reads the essay and interprets it as a fantasy for the two of them, which Jenna embraces. Ming finally confronts Becca, the head of the Asian mafia, after Becca gets Fred Wu sent to live out of state, and she ends up with the respect of Becca’s minions.
Episode 10
Title: “Redefining Jenna”
Original Airdate: June 11, 2013
Collin invites Jenna to an art opening on the same night that Tamara is getting the chance to co-host the annual Black Friday party with the popular girls known as the Julies. After Matty admits that he feels neglected in his relationship with Jenna, she goes alone to the opening, and once again connects with Collin. When they finally return to Tamara’s party, Jenna ends up making out with Collin in his car before meeting back up with Matty. Ming discovers that she is now the head of the Asian mafia. Lissa admits that she believes she was responsible for Ricky Schwartz’s death because she had been eating peanuts before making out with him.
