People who know that I'm a Bondsman often ask me "Is it really necessary to contact a bail agent to obtain inmate information?" My answer always comes down to "YES, but not just any bondsman". Don't get me wrong, calling a bail bonds office is NOT the only way obtain information. Law enforcement agencies such as the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Sheriff's Department provide phone numbers to call for inmate information, but are often times not the most convenient. In Los Angeles county there is a wide range of LAPD Station Jails and Sheriff Department Jails. All of which have their own "inconvenience" built in per se. Here are some examples:Santa Clarita Sheriff's Department Station Jail (Smaller) vs. Los Angeles County Jail (Bigger)The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station Jail is a smaller jail that according to their website, covers a territory of approximately 130,000 residents.
This jail is usually operated by ONE jailer. The single jailer is responsible for booking newly arrested inmates, feeding inmates, processing visitations, releasing inmates and of course providing inmate bail bond information. There has been occasions where my clients have mentioned that they were incarcerated with 30 other inmates in that station. Now just imagine what someone without the help of an experienced bail bondsman will have to go through in order to obtain inmate information, and most importantly interpret the information.
Due to the jailer's workload, he or she can't answer every single call. Often times, the person at the front desk asks to call back at a later time. The same applies even if you try to obtain inmate information in person. If the Sheriff's station or Jail becomes overcrowded, then inmates get transferred to the Los Angeles County Jail. Most small LAPD station Jails or Los Angeles Sheriff's Stations do not have medical personnel onsite, which means that any inmate with a medical condition will be transferred to the Los Angeles County Jail. A bail bond agent can save you the stress of having to run around trying to obtain answers. A bail bond agent can explain the booking process, obtain information, and assist help get the inmate get released in the form of a bail bond.
Even if you haven't yet decided to bail the person out, any respectable bail bond companies like Bail Unit Bail Bonds will be more than happy to provide you with information to help you make that decision. In the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station Jail, inmates are released within 1 hour after the bail bond is posted. Even if your loved one is in a smaller Jail or police station, you can waste valuable time by not calling a professional bail agent.Los Angeles County Jail, Men's Central Jail to be more specific, is the largest Jail in the world (women get transferred to Century Detention Center). According to their website, this jail houses about 5,000 inmates from all over Los Angeles County. Obtaining inmate bail information from the Los Angeles County Jail can be a nightmare, even for inexperienced bondsmen.
Due to the capacity of the jail, it will be hard to get someone on the phone on your first call. Once you finally get through, you will find out that not everyone who picks up the inmate information line is a Sheriff or Jailer, but also trustees (inmates serving an alternative sentence). A trustee will look up the inmate and provide you with the code/s of the charges and the set bail amount, but a trustee will usually not provide you with the steps to take to get someone bailed out. Another issue is that if a person was recently transferred to the Los Angeles County Jail, you will be told that the inmate is not updated. What that means is that you won't be able to obtain inmate information until the inmate is fully processed. Time is of the essence, even with the help of a professional bail bond agent it can take from 12-24 hours for an inmate to be released on a bail bond. The Los Angeles County Jail is not pretty place, so if you intend to bail a loved out of jail, you definitely need to not waste time and call a professional bail bonds agent for help.
