Troubleshooting Your Window Cleaning Technique

If you wish to give your windows a crystal clean and perfect look, you have to spend considerable time and effort to perfect your window cleaning skills. As you try to improve your skills, you may encounter some problems that you do not know how to overcome. Here are some useful troubleshooting tips that can help you solve problems that you may encounter while you are cleaning your windows.

Problem No. 1: Reach

If you have to stretch your limbs and body to reach certain parts of a window, you will experience excessive strain, and you will not be able to control your window cleaning tools properly.

Solution:

Always check your reach before you start cleaning a window. Position yourself in front of the window and wave your squeegee over the top and side edges, without actually making contact with the glass. If you can reach the furthest corners of the window comfortably, you can start cleaning. On the other hand, you cannot reach certain parts of the window, you have to use a ladder or an extension pole. You may also have to clean one small section at a time.

Problem No. 2: Water Trails

When you are using a squeegee to remove water and cleaning solution from the window, you may find that the tip of your squeegee leaves water trails. This can happen because of a number of reasons.

Solution: If you find that ends of the rubber blade are curving upwards, you have to move the brass end clips further out. Make sure that the rubber blade is flat and straight across the channel. If you see that there is too much water at the tip of the rubber blade, wipe the blade with a towel. If you find that the squeegee is pulling water from the edge of the window, wipe all edges with a towel before you start to squeegee again.

Problem No. 3: Water Lines

Water lines can appear when you are pulling a squeegee across the window.

Solution: If the rubber blade is damaged or worn, you can flip it over or have it replaced with a new one. If dirt or debris is trapped under the rubber blade, wipe it clean with a towel. Water lines can occur because the window is not wet enough for the squeegee to remove all the dirt. In this case, use more water to rinse out as much dirt as you can.

Problem No. 4: Squeegee Lines

A squeegee line is usually found in the middle of a pass, and it is similar in length and parallel to the squeegee blade. It occurs when the squeegee stops momentarily in the middle of a pass.

Solution: Keep the squeegee in continuous movement throughout the pass. Do not start squeegeeing in the middle of a window.

Problem No. 5: Chatter Marks

Your squeegee may chatter or bounce while it is moving along a pass.

Solution: A worn rubber blade can cause chattering, and you can make your squeegee work smoothly again by replacing it with a new blade. Chattering also happens if the glass is too dry. If this is the reason, wet the glass again with more water. As you are moving your squeegee across the window, you may move it too high on the upper portion that has already been squeegeed. Keep your squeegee less than 3 inches over the dry portion of the window to prevent chattering.

Problem No. 6: Wide Streaks

Wide streaks can also appear on a pass as you are pulling your squeegee.

Solution: If wide streaks occur because you are applying too much pressure on your squeegee, relax your grip and pull the squeegee more lightly across the window. You will also get wide streaks if a section of the window has dried before you squeegee it. In this case, you should apply more cleaning solution and water on the window. Wide streaks can also result from worn squeegee rubber. Replace the rubber blade with a new one. I hope these tips will help you as much as they have helped me with my own Big Bear window cleaning business.
