How to Get Your Citizenship

    • 1). Complete Form N-400 requesting naturalization. You will be required to provide information on all past addresses in the United States, jobs any family members you have who are U.S. citizens, as well as your past habits such as habitual drinking, criminal convictions and gambling.

    • 2). Send your completed Form N-400 to the appropriate service center along with any additional forms required for your application (such as the Form N-648, Medical Certification for Disability Exceptions, if you are applying for exemption to the requirements for English language or civics classes on the basis of a disability), two passport photos and a check for the application fee -- $680 as of 2011.

    • 3). Complete the process requirements. As soon as you receive your appointment letter from the immigration services office, you will be required to go to a specified location and have your fingerprints taken. They may also request additional documentation from you. Fulfill these requests as quickly as possible so you can get your naturalization interview scheduled.

    • 4). Attend your naturalization interview, bringing along all requested documents, your green card and a state-issued identification. You will be required to take two tests, one on English language and the other on U.S. history and civics. Your case will be reviewed and you will be told whether or not you passed.

    • 5). Take the oath of allegiance at a naturalization ceremony. You will need to provide identification when you check in at the ceremony, so be sure to bring along state-issued identification and your green card. You will receive a naturalization certificate at the end of the ceremony.
