- 1). Grab some maps and plan your route and the length of your trip. You can choose to take a direct route on major roads such as I-10 into New Orleans or explore minor roads and get off the beaten track. Driving along the coastal roads of the Gulf of Mexico also is an option. Try online maps to identify your preferred route.
- 2). Read some guidebooks or do some online researching about the places and attractions you want to see en route. Coming from the north, big cities such as Memphis and Nashville offer several attractions. You may want to visit Dallas or Houston if you approach New Orleans from the west. Once you reach Louisiana, try visiting some of the sites on the African American Heritage Trail or visit some of the historic buildings in Baton Rouge. The Louisiana and Alabama Tourist Board websites are useful resources for planning your sightseeing.
- 3). Book your hotels before departure if you know where you intend to be each night. Check that your accommodations are close to your route so you quickly can be back on the road each day. If you want greater flexibility on overnight destinations, have a cell phone handy to call ahead to check on accommodations while you're en route.
- 4). Turn on the radio each day and listen for route information. Local radio stations such as KNOE will provide up-to-the-minute traffic information. Check your route each day before departure so you are aware of closed roads or possible diversions.
- 5). Pack thoroughly for your trip. You should have equipment for maintaining your vehicle and a cell phone with charger. You may drive on roads that have very little traffic or few places to stop. Always have food and water in the car.
