Golden Globes 2014 Makeup Tutorial: Get Emilia Clarke’S Red Carpet Smoky Eye

The 71st Golden Globe Awards red carpet thankfully provided us with plenty of beauty inspiration to get us through nasty January. We saw lots of tousled hair against full glitz sparkly dresses, nude lips, teased crowns, and side boob. Props to Robin Wright for flashing her nipple tape and still looking fantastic.

In picking a star to copy for this tutorial, I first narrowed it down to one type of look. A huge trend on last night's red carpet that I've been waiting to try is the 90s-made-modern peachy nude lip. Michelle Dockery, Emilia Clarke, and Jessica Chastain all rocked a peachy, glossy, not-quite-brown nude lip with smoky eyes of varying intensity. Even Olivia Wilde's nude gloss had a tawny tint. Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke paired her flawless face with casually tousled waves, a look I particularly love for the red carpet, so that's who we're using for this tutorial.

Creamy, flawless skin is a must for this look. To get Emilia's velvety complexion, apply a matte foundation over clean, well moisturized skin. I applied Origins GinZing around my eyes and a dab of LUSH Cosmetic Lad to my face. Cosmetic Lad has the smell and texture of orange frosting. It's supposedly made for men, but the soothing after-shave balm is an amazing facial moisturizer for cold, dry weather. Follow with L'Oreal Magic Nude foundation and blend with a stippling brush. Add a touch of Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer in the €brightener€ shade under eyes.

Emilia Clarke appears to have skipped contouring, so I avoided my usual bronzer. Dust a mauvey blush, like Milani Baked Blush in Dolce Pink, across the apples of cheeks. Since we're not using bronzer, I also brushed a bit around my hairline and chin for a little color and dimension.

Next, I filled in my brows. If you have dark hair, use powder to get the softer look preferred by Emilia and her alter ego, Daenerys. I opted for pencil so I could widen and soften the shape of my brows. Emilia wears hers with a softer, straighter shape than my preferred high arch.

I don't usually wear smoky eyes, so I picked up a Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow Quad in Mocha Motion for this look. You'll need a cream color, a matte light and dark taupe, and a warm brown shadow with some shimmer.

Start by applying a wash of cream shadow across your entire lid.

Press a taupe color (the €lid€ shade from this quad) all over the lid up to the crease. You can use a packing brush or the pad of your ring finger.

With a pointed crease brush and a cool, dark, taupe (the €liner€ color from this quad) trace along your crease and the outer V of your eye, extending the shape slightly past the outer corner. Diffuse the edges with a soft, clean blending brush.

To give the look more intensity, I pressed a little Toasted by Urban Decay (in the original Naked palette) just on the ball of my eyelid, inside the line of our crease color. Toasted is a warm rosy brown with shimmer.

Gently tightline the upper and lower lashlines of your eyes with a creamy black pencil. I ran mine along lashes and the inner rims. Curl lashes and apply black mascara.

Tawny lips are the real focus of this look. To get a flattering warm nude, I first applied Milani Color Statement Lipstick in Nude Creme and layered Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor in Warm Me Up on top. You can skip gloss, but this dry weather had me reaching for a little NYX Butter Gloss in Apple Strudel.

Emilia's softly waved hair is as easy as it is versatile. This is one of the only times I will tell you to start with clean hair. Rub a dab of smoothing cream, like Garnier Fructis Style Sleek & Shine Sleek Finish 5-in-1 serum spray if your locks are feeling dry. Part your hair neatly down the center and make loose, uneven waves with a flatiron. Clamp a 2 inch or larger section in your iron close to the root, rotate the iron away from your face, and pull hair through. Twist the curls around your fingers to lock in the curl. Finish by shaking the waves apart with your fingers and giving a light mist of hairspray.
