Cave Towns
The Bakhchisarai area is one of the most interesting in Crimea. It has a high number of geological, archeological and historical monuments. In this land the beauty of nature is inseparable from rich history of many tribes and nations, who dwelt in these places. It is the land of cave cities and monasteries, canyons, picturesque uplands and valleys.
Duration: 6 days.

Day 1. The tour starts in Simferopol. Visit Bakla cave town. Then transfer to the tourist base at the foot of Eski-Kermen mountain.
Day 2. Radial trip to Eski-Kermen cave town. It has about four hundred artificial caves. The name Eski-Kermen means "The Old Fortress" in tatar language. According to archeological sources the fortress was built in the 6th century, on the initiative of Byzantine authorities. Eski was not only a fortress, but also a major center of trade, religion and commerce. Agriculture was the basis of its economy. Fertile valleys were used to cultivate vines, vegetables and fruit.
Its powerful defense system, well-developed economy and advantageous position made Eski-Kermen an important political and administrative center in South-Western Crimea.
After visiting Eski-Kermen we go to Donators cave church and the tower Kuz-Kule.
Day 3. Hiking trip to Chelter and Shuldan cave monasteries.
Chelter is a five-stored cave monastery. It has a gallery with stone columns and ancient stairs above the steep slope. Shuldan is smaller and it has only one entrance and several caves.
Then we drive to the village near Mangup-Kale cave town where accommodation is available.
Day 4. Discover Mangup - the former capital of Feodoro principality which existed here in Middle Ages. The Turks captured the citadel of Feodoro in 15th century; they owned this fortress for more than three hundred years. The last inhabitants of Mangup were the karaites. On the slopes of Mangup there is a karaites cemetery with hundreds of stone tombs, engraved with Hebrew characters.
Day 5. Coach takes you to a remarkable cave monastery Kachi-Kalion. It rises high above the highway. In a separate stone there is a church devoted to St. Sofia, ‘Faith', ‘Hope', and ‘Love'. The cells are cut in the rock in several levels. St. Anastasia's Water Spring is located Under the natural dome of the limestone rock, under the stone cross.
After visiting Kachi-Kalion we drive to Bahchisarai. Accommodation in hotel Prival. This day tourists visit the Khans palace museum and walk along the streets of the old town, see the ruins of Armenian monastery and the memorial cemetery. Taste Crimean Tatar quisine.
Day 6. is devoted to Chufut-Kale, a large cave town near Bakhchisarai. It consisted of Old and New towns which were protected by walls with towers and moats.
Near Chufut-Kale there is Teshik-Kuyu well which is also worth visiting.
Then tourists can see the Assumption orthodox monastery. The monastery has rich history and now is becoming an important pilgrimage site.
Transfer back to Simferopol.
Some other historical sites of this area that are not included in this tour include Kuz-Kermen and Tepe-Kermen cave towns and Surenskaja fortress. We can visit them as well if we'll make this tour longer or instead of any other cave towns.
