The Art of Creating Realistic Lion Sculptures

So what is it that makes us look in awe at the lion sculptures.
Some lion sculptures out there can be magnificent.
So how do you go about achieving this effect.
I am going to go through the process of sharing with you the right ingredients that will make your lion sculpture come to life.
So let's get to it shall we.
The Static Lion sculpture Ok..
..
...
for all you people who might be wondering what I mean by "Static".
(Just in case some of you are wondering, as I was the same once).
If you do any art, you need to consider if you are going to bring movement into your sculpture.
Static is not moving- or you could say..
..
like still art.
Now it does not mean that when we do a sculpture, we don't intend to put that promise of movement and action into it.
I am sure you intended this.
When I first started sculpting, I found that I also needed to gain experience in achieving movement and action as well.
We all go through this hurdle.
As difficult as it might seem at the time.
So, to explain it in plain English.
(And you know its hard to just put into works when it comes to art).
I am sure some great artists have also stated this is some of their quotes from the past.
Its an expertise that will take a little time to achieve, and I know frustration is one of the greatest results from not breathing life and action into your lion sculpture right away.
In fact...
I still see so many sculptors out there who still don't get it.
Their sculpture study is good.
Yet their subjects, human or animal, just seem wooden, and don't bring out any emotions or intention.
Focus on what's the most important to the lion that you value.
Strength..
..
size...
? can you think of any others.
Lion Sculpture in Action What do you see when an animal is in action? what comes to mind firstly? you see the strain on the animal don't you.
And what is most prominent about this.
The strain that the body is put under when called into action.
And this is not only depicted in the position of the lion in action.
Its also depicted in their muscle mass.
The separation of the muscles, as they bulge on the surface of the lions fine coat.
So, concentration in this area is going to get you the promise of action you need in your dimensional sculpture.
Bronze Lion Sculpture, Marble, or Stone? Many sculptures are cast in these three main elements.
So which one should you choose.
Well you don't have a choice if you were to carve a sculpture form stone.
But if you are going to have your sculpture cast.
You have choices, and there are more than ever these days.
I still think that you cant beat the solidarity of bronze or stone for that earthly look.
And when it comes to size.
I wouldn't be looking around for any other alternatives.
Bronze, stone and marble all have that look of heaviness about them.
Not just because they do weigh so much, when we are thinking of big sculptures.
They also have a timelessness about them.
Stone gives the more earthen look that makes you feel warm.
And I for one, like that warm feeling.
Marble will give off a cold look, but also gives the feeling of crispness and the appearance of smoothness that you cant help touching.
Lion Statues and Size We all know what it is like to be faced with, looking up to a big sculpture.
We feel dominated by its pure size and solidarity.
The bigger the lion sculpture the more impact you are going to get.
The onlooker will feel the effect of your sculpture.
And when it comes to the natural form of the lion.
It brings forth a sense of unease that is somehow pleasing.
When larger in size, you need to watch your surfaces, You need to roughen up the surface in order to add the dimension of light to your lion sculpture.
If you are faced with a larger than life sculpture, youput in these dramatic undercuts, groven edges and rough surfaces.
Light there fore has surfaces that it can create shadows; thus bringing the dramatic affect of shape.
When sculpting a much smaller lion sculpture, you can dispense with making the lion surface rough.
And can make its surfaces smooth.
This smooth effect will create the impact and naturalness you require.
Whether you sculpt a larger than life lion sculpture or a small lion sculpture.
You will find different audiences and buyers for your work.
I have only touched on the surface of the philosophy to sculpture and how you can create the effect to you audience.
If you are hungry to know more.

Sculpted more than many other animal subjects.
