How to Get from Vigo to Porto (Portugal)

Porto, Portugal's second biggest city, and Vigo, a popular port city in Galicia, Spain, are just 150km apart, making them both great cities to visit from the other.

If traveling by train from Porto to northern Spain, you'll always need to change trains in Vigo.

What's the Best Way to Get from Vigo to Porto?

By Train

There is a direct train from Vigo to Porto, twice daily.

Tickets cost around 15 euros and take just over two hours (note: Portuguese time is an hour behind Spanish time. The Portuguese train website usually gets confused by this).

Book tickets from Rail Europe or Renfe.com.

By Car

It takes around an hour-and-a-half to make drive the 150km between these two cities. It's an easy journey, on the A3 highway. Note that the A3 is a toll road.

Why Make the Trip?

Things to Do in Vigo
  • Arguably Spain's most beautiful beaches are to be found on the Islas de Cies, a short boat ride from Vigo.

Do I Need My Passport to Cross the Spanish and Portuguese Border?

No, Portugal and Spain are both in the Schengen zone, the area of Europe where you don't need a passport to cross borders.

However, spot checks are possible and, in theory, if you can't prove you have the right to cross the border, you could get in trouble, which basically means proving your nationality and/or showing a relevant visa.
