The legions of fans have supported the literally hundreds of television episodes from numerous series and spin-offs, as well as eleven movies. Someone has to be out there watching all this stuff and they're called Trekkies!
The show was in danger of being canceled several times. According to one source it's said that Lucille Ball, head of Desilu Studios, "single handledly kept Star Trek from being dumped from the lineup.*" The second season wasn't any better for the show and at that time a write-in campaign of over 1,000,000 letters saved the show. The show was renewed, but was stuck in a bad time slot where it couldn't survive.
