Definition:

Nicotinic acid, or vitamin B3, is a form of niacin available as an over-the-counter supplement or as a prescription drug (Niaspan). Nicotinic acid is also available in a variety of formulations, including immediate-release, extended release, and sustained-release.

Nicotinic acid affects your lipids by lowering your LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Nicotinic acid is able to raise HDL, or "good" cholesterol, higher than any other cholesterol-lowering drug currently on the market.

Also Known As: niacin, vitamin B3
