- 1). Clean your ceramic tile. Any home improvement project works better on a clean surface, and drilling ceramic tile is no exception. Since drills tend to "skitter" around on ceramic tile anyway, you need a clean surface in order to work effectively. Wipe the tiles down with ceramic tile cleaner and a clean rag.
- 2). Make a masking tape "X" where you plan to place the screw. The center of the X will be where the hole will be. This will add extra friction to prevent the drill from sliding.
- 3). Drill a hole for the screw using the diamond-tipped bit. Do not use the screw to make the hole. Just drill the hole using the bit. Apply firm pressure and use a medium---not high---speed. This will take some time and patience, so be prepared.
- 4). Carefully clear the area around the hole. Remove the masking tape and wipe away any dust.
- 5). Use the screwdriver to gently screw the screw into the hole you made with the drill. Do not force it. If the hole is not quite big enough, then use a slightly larger bit and repeat the process. If you force the screw into the hole, you may shatter the ceramic tile.
