- Foods that raise your "bad" cholesterol level have one thing in common: saturated fat, which is fat or oil that can be found mostly in animal products. However, some vegetable products, such as coconut oil, contain large amounts of saturated fat, which is widely considered the "worst" type of fat and has been linked to an increase in heart disease and development of certain cancers.
- Because saturated fat is found mostly in animal products, it is best to limit or totally avoid processed meats (such as sausage or bologna), organ meats (such as gizzards or liver), poultry with the skin on, egg yolks, and full fat cheeses, milk and ice cream.
- Avoiding these foods and replacing them with healthier choices will lower the amount of saturated fat you consume. Add daily exercise, and you'll be on your way to a heart-healthier you.
