Refrigerator Cleaning Tips

Refrigerators of today are lower maintenance then ever before mostly due to the advent of frost free or self defrosting technology. However, since food is stored in refrigerator and freezer compartments the possibility always exists for the development of odors, bacteria, and staining. The following article discusses manufacturer recommended cleaning guidelines for free standing and built in refrigerators.
  1. Unplug or disconnect power. Clean both refrigerator and freezer compartments as air circulates between the two and therefore both must be cleaned simultaneously to eliminate odors.
  2. Using a mixture of mild detergent and warm water hand wash, rinse, and thoroughly dry removable parts and interior surfaces. Use of a clean non-abrasive sponge or soft cloth is also acceptable.
  3. Remove light shield and wash in detergent/water mixture, dry, and replace.
  4. Wash stainless steel and painted metal exterior surfaces with a soft cloth or clean sponge and a mixture of warm water and mild detergent.
  5. Cleaning the condenser of a free standing refrigerator:  under normal operating conditions most condensers do not require maintenance. If the environment is especially dusty or greasy, for instance abnormal pet traffic, the following rules may be used to clean a refrigerator condenser.
    1. Where gloves to avoid injury from possible sharp parts.
    2. Remove grill covering condenser.
    3. Use the soft brush attachment and your vacuum cleaner to clean the grill, open area behind the grill, and the front surface of the condenser.
    4. Make sure to vacuum in the direction of the condenser fins so as not to bend them.
    5. Replace the grill.
  6. Plug refrigerator back in or reconnect power.

Other tips and considerations:
  1. There are some manufactures that also suggest adding a little baking soda to the water and soap mixture to add with removing stains and odors.
  2. Never submerge or throw hot water onto cold glass shelves to avoid cracking.
  3. Do not use vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or other alcohol based cleaners on interior surfaces.

Following the simple guidelines above will help to keep your refrigeration clean, bacteria and odor free, and running smoothly and efficiently for years to come.
